David Hildreth, Engineering CAD Manager with Contech, has networked with National Switchgear for over eight years. His past, as well as current relationship with them landed him a guest seat at the Houston SX race. While he had been to a Supercross race in the past, never had he experienced such an “up close and personal” experience.
“We walked the track and actually schmoozed with the racers,” Hildreth explained. “I met James Stewart Sr. and Jr. and could not believe I was having this opportunity.”
Hildreth also enjoyed talking to additional riders down in the pits and had a first class seat in the press box to watch the race.
“My son was so jealous,” Hildreth said. “To be able to walk among these ‘legends’ was the chance of a lifetime.”
Jonathan and Sharlene Kropf, along with their son, Jonathan Jr., were the guests of NSG on February 6th for this “pink” race. The Anaheim 2 race raises funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, so most of the bikes and racers riding gear are transformed to pink for one night.
Kropf, who is Operations Manager of Power Systems Testing and NSG have done business together for many years. Friendships have also formed so when the opportunity to attend the race surfaced, they jumped at the chance to go.
“We had never been to a Supercross race,” Kropf explained. “We had no idea what to expect. It’s quite a different atmosphere, and far more exciting than what you can see on television.”
The Kropf’s were treated to an array of behind the scenes experiences including meeting and chatting with the riders, spending time in the pits and participating in the pre-race track walk. This is where the teams actually walk the track before the event and riders try to determine what lines are best suited to their bikes.
You have no idea how big the track actually is,” said Kropf. “It looks much smaller from the grandstand. You can actually see what they have to deal with down there. This was truly a memorable experience and most people never get this kind of a chance. Our 13 year old son now wants to be a rider.”
Gary Highley and Micheal Rice were the fortunate guests of National Switchgear (NSG) for the challenging Oakland race. Both men who are employed by ABB, Inc., have ongoing, established working relationships with NSG.
“I had never been to a Supercross race before,” Highly, General Manager for the ABB Napa Service Center, explained. “While Mike, our Lead Breaker Technician
had done some racing and was familiar with the sport, I had no idea what to expect. To say it was exciting would be putting it mildly.”
The track was coated with rain and ruts, and this race would turn out to be a battle between rookies and seasoned racers.
Besides interacting with their friends at NSG, the men were able to meet some of the most legendary people in the sport, such as Ricky Carmichael, whose unrivaled successes in the sport of Motocross has given him the nickname "The GOAT", standing for Greatest of All Time.
“It was a great time, Rice reported, “Thanks to our pals at NSG, we had an incredible day.”

Phoenix RACE, January 16, 2011
Thrills, spills and a reunion greeted guests from General Electric in Phoenix on January 16th. Attending were Daryl Curran, GE Tucson Service Center lead foreman, GE Energy Tucson Service Center manager, Matteo Ghiotto, Stuart Campbell, GE Regional Cost Estimator, and a guest of GE, Drew Athetus.
“We could not have received better VIP treatment if we tried,” commented Daryl Curran. “Being trackside at beautiful Chase Stadium gives you a whole new world with which to view a race, and that is extremely exciting. The thrill and rush of the noise, the speed…phenomenal! I won’t ever forget this.”
Curran had worked with NSG at one time and although the companies do business together, he had not seen his good friends in over five years, making the event all the more memorable.
GE’s guests were also treated to a tour of the pit area where bikes were being repaired and were able to rub shoulders and chat with some of the racers.
Excitement was in the air in Anaheim on January 8. New teams debuted, riders switched teams, rookies began their first season, and new sponsors, including NSG, came on board. The lucky guests, compliments of NSG, were David Huffman and his wife, Johnnie.
Huffman is the president of Power Systems Testing (PST) in Hayward, CA, and has been a client of National Switchgear for twenty-three years. Huffman and Doug Powell, President of NSG, have become close friends over their decades of doing business together.
As to how Huffman managed to be invited to the premier race, “Just lucky, I guess,” he said with a grin. “It’s great to be in the right place at the right time.”
Huffman’s wife, Johnnie, had never been to a race. She was so impressed that she is now hooked on the sport and taking friends to an upcoming race.
“It truly was a ‘wow’, Huffman commented. “The qualifying rounds were thrilling and being there with our friends from NSG made it a very memorable occasion. We really support NSG’s efforts with this sponsorship.”

ActionSportsTV.com to Sponsor the Violation1.com / Shea Racing / National Switchgear SX Racing Team
HOUSTON (October 5, 2010) – The AMA Monster Energy Supercross pits will change in 2011 when fans can hang out at the Violation1.com/Shea Racing/National Switchgear powered by Munn Racing KTM team pit to watch action sports flicks and family-friendly movies. HD Internet channel ActionSportsTV.com has signed an agreement to sponsor the team for the entire 17-round 2011 AMA Supercross series.
ActionSportsTV.com is the action sports content provider for Axiom Entertainment. Axiom developed an Internet channel that makes the movie and TV download process user-friendly for all ages and for all computer skill-levels, taking the next necessary step to blur the line between a user's PC, TV, DVD player, and mobile device. Users can access content via rental downloads, full purchase downloads and by-mail DVDs. It’s a family-friendly Internet channel that offers parents the ability to limit content.
"Our partnership with Shea Racing will take ActionSportsTV.com to the level we have always dreamed," said AMA Pro GNC Flat Track racer Johnny Lewis who is an ActionSportsTV.com part owner. "We’ve been working with Axiom Entertainment for more than two years on this partnership. To use the platform of an established AMA Supercross team that now has ties to a corporate sponsor and the KTM factory is awesome. Back in 2008, I partnered with Tim Shea when he was running an AMA Pro Supermoto team and raced under his banner so it’s great to work with him again. We are excited to provide AMA Supercross fans with entertainment outside the stadiums and sign them up for our giveaway program."
The ActionSportsTV.com sponsorship further enables Violation1.com/Shea Racing/National Switchgear to have the resources to fulfill its racing goals and to enhance its pit party experience. Before the first round, ActionSportsTV.com will expand online content—including motocross videos and related movies—for supercross fans to download. It will also finalize promotions for the 2011 AMA Supercross season.
"I first experienced the capability of ActionSportsTV.com when they were working on the channel in 2008 when I had my AMA Pro Supermoto team," said team owner Tim Shea. "Since our first season on the AMA Supercross tour, we’ve worked hard to take the fan experience to the next level. Our partnership with ActionSportsTV.com allows us to get fans even more engaged through a flat screen entertainment display and giveaways."
Team Violation1.com/Shea Racing/National Switchgear powered by Munn Racing KTM will make its debut at the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series opener on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim, California. Make sure to be there and stop by the pit to watch ActionSportsTV.com content and sign up for giveaways. You can buy tickets now at www.supercrossonline.com. Keep posted to the team at www.sheamoto.com.
